Mississippi residents might get back the ability to enact public policy through statewide ballot initiatives. But people would be banned from using the process to change abortion laws. Republican lawmakers advanced a proposal Tuesday that would strip voters of their ability to launch abortion measures under a revived ballot initiative process. Mississippi had an initiative procedure for decades, but the state Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that it was invalid. Republican Rep. Fred Shanks says there is concern among Republican lawmakers about Mississippi voters trying to use the process to expand abortion access that is now tightly limited. The resolution goes to the full House for more debate.

The U.S. Forest Service says a specialized team of wildlife managers has killed 19 wild cows in the Gila Wilderness in southwestern New Mexico as part of a contested project to rid the area of the unauthorized animals. The three-day operation used a helicopter and high powered rifles to take out the cows. Ranchers had opposed the project, saying rounding up the animals and removing them would have been a more humane way to clear them out of the wilderness. A federal judge had denied the ranchers' request to delay the project, saying the cows were indeed feral and the Forest Service had the authority to kill them.

A West Virginia bill described by supporters as a tool to protect religious freedom is headed to the desk of Republican Gov. Jim Justice. The bill labeled by LGBTQ rights advocates as a “license to discriminate” was approved by the GOP-dominated Senate Tuesday, a day after it passed the House. The only ‘no’ votes came from the Senate’s three Democrats. The bill stipulates that the government can't substantially burden someone’s constitutional right to freedom of religion unless doing so “is essential to further a compelling governmental interest.” Opponents assert the bill’s language would allow for discrimination against the LGBTQ community and religious minorities.
